FOLLOWING A SERIES OF CONFLICT RESOLUTION LESSONS, STUDENTS IN GRADES 3, 4, AND 5 WERE NOMINATED BY THEIR PEERS TO REPRESENT THEM AS PEER MEDIATORS. PEER MEDIATORS HELP STUDENTS RESOLVE CONFLICTS PEACEABLY. THE PEER MEDIATION PROGRAM HELPS STUDENTS LEARN HOW TO TALK OUT CONFLICTS RESPECTFULLY, BECOME BETTER LISTENERS, MANAGE ANGER AND ADVOCATE FOR THEMSELVES AND OTHER KIDS.

ADDITIONALLY, OUR SCHOOL PARTICIPATES IN THE RESTORATIVE JUSTICE PROGRAM. MANY STAFF MEMBERS, INCLUDING TEACHERS, PARAPROFESSIONALS, ADMINISTRATORS, AND OUT OF CLASSROOM PERSONNEL HAVE RECEIVED TRAINING AND ARE IMPLEMENTING THE “4 R’S”, READING- WRITING- RESPECT- RESOLUTION. IN THE RESTORATIVE JUSTICE ROOM, RESTORATIVE CIRCLES MEET AS A FORUM TO EXPRESS FEELINGS WHILE OTHERS LISTEN WITHOUT JUDGEMENTS OR ASSUMPTIONS. A SYMBOLIC TALKING PIECE IS PASSED FROM SPEAKER TO SPEAKER AND THE CIRCLE CLOSES WITH AN OPPORTUNITY FOR THE FIRST SPEAKER TO CONCLUDE WITH A REFLECTION ON THE EXPERIENCE.
